NHK International 1980-2013

1980 ・ Foundation of NHK International, Inc. in July.
・ Contract for world distribution rights for the TV program, "Legacy for the Future," produced by NHK in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of broadcasting.
1981 ・ Supply of "NHK Weekly News" to Japanese-language broadcasters in Los Angeles, Hawaii, New York and Brazil.
1982 ・ Supply of TV programs through Cultural Grant Aid from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs begins.
1983 ・ NHK TV series, "The Silk Road," draws enthusiastic reactions at MIP in Cannes.
1984 ・ Chinese language version of NHK drama "Oshin" aired in Singapore, followed by Thailand, China, and Hong Kong.
1985 ・ Support of overseas broadcasters in their coverage of the Kobe Universiade.
1986 ・ Production of the English version of "Oshin" with the assistance of the Japan Foundation, Hoso Bunka Foundation (HBF) and NHK.
1987 ・ Purchase of "Sesame Street" series from CTW in the US. Broadcast resumed on NHK satellite channel. (Returned to Educational TV in 1988.)
1988 ・ Commissioned by NHK to suppot foreign broadcasters covering Japan, program exchange and support for Radio Japan.
1989 ・ Authorized by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications as a Specialized Non-profit Foundation for the promotion of overseas understanding of Japan.
・ Support of overseas broadcasters for coverage of the Funeral of Emperor Hirohito.
1990 ・ First Japanese TV Program Festival held in Beining and other 9 cities in the PRC. This becomes an annual event.
・ Japanese Language Course aired on TV University in the PRC.
1991 ・ International Symposium, "The World's View of Japan through Oshin," held in commemoration of the 10th anniversary, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the Japan Foundation, Hoso Bunka Foundation and NHK.
・ Operation of the JAPAN PRIZE entrusted by NHK.
1992 ・ First Japanese Video Festival held in Vietnam.
・ Program production for JAMCO begins.
1993 ・ Support of overseas broadcasters in their coverage of the Tokyo G7 Summit and the royal wedding of the Crown Prince and Princess.
・ Symposium, "What is Happening to the World's TV Programs for Children?," held in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the JAPAN PRIZE.
1994 ・ Organization of special events in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Kobe, marking the 25th anniversary of the airing of "Sesame Street" in the US.
・ Support of overseas broadcasters in their coverage of the Asian Games in Hiroshima.
1995 ・ Co-host with the Japan Foundation of "The Global Spread of the Japanese Language," a symposium in commemoration of the 15th anniversary.
・ Support of overseas broadcasters in their coverage of the Kobe-Hanshin Earthquake, the APEC Conference in Osaka, and the 50th memorial of the A-bombing of Hiroshima.
1996 ・ Number of countries/regions "Oshin" supplied to tops 50.
・ Programs supplied by Cultural Grant Aid exceeds 10,000.
1997 ・ Number of countries/regions "Oshin" supplied to tops 50.
・ Programs supplied by Cultural Grant Aid exceeds 10,000.
1998 ・ Support of overseas broadcasters in their coverage of the Nagano Olympics.
・ Participants in video festivals in the PRC top the million mark.
・ First Japanese Video Festival held in Laos.
・ "NHK's Educational Programs on the Global Stages," focusing on the supply of TV programs through Japan's public funds and how they are used in reciepient countries, aired on NHK TV.
1999 ・ Programs supplied by Cultural Grant Aid and the Japan Foundation exceed 25,000.
・ Co-host with NHK of "The World of Sesame Street" marking the 30th anniversary of broadcasting of the series.
・ Record number of 212 TV program entries in the 26th JAPAN PRIZE Contest.
2000 ・ Production of international version of NHK drama "Suzuran," and supply to Thailand (broadcast from October 2000.)
・ The exhibition, "The World of the Tale of Heike," held at the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris, commemorating the 20th anniversary.
・ Operation of the IBC for the G8 Summit in Okinawa, and support of 41 overseas broadcasters in their coverage.
・ First Hi-Vision HDTV video festival held in Beijing and Shanghai.
・ First video festival held in Mongolia and India.
2001 ・ The Exhibition "The World of the Tale of Heike" at Hague.
・ The Exhibition "Kabuki Paper Sculptures" held in London
・ 2nd Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Qingdao and Guiyang.
・ The Exhibition of the artist, Kiyoshi Nakashima, "Ler Vertes Annee - Le Coeur

2002 ・ 662 programs offered to Kosovo through UN funding.
・ 2nd video festival held in Mongolia. Rumi Hiiragi, who played Moe in "Suzuran" proves popular there.
・ 3rd Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Dailian, Changsha.
・ The 35th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China commemorative symposium "Maintenance and Development of water resources of the Yellow River" held in Beijing.
・ Program series "The Japanese table" offered to a support association for high school students' study abroad in the USA.
2003 ・ "Oshin" supplied to Iraq (60th country).
・ 5th video festival held in Mongolia.
・ 4th Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Chongqing, Amoy.
・ Organized the 30th JAPAN PRIZE "Children's Hope, Adults' Promise".
・ "Sesame Street" broadcast ends at the end of March.
2004 ・ "Oshin" supplied to Afghanistan (61st country).
・ 3rd video festival held in India.
・ 5th Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan.
・ Program series "Keys to Japan" produced for foreign students from Asia
2005 ・ "Oshin" supplied to Bhutan (62nd country).
・ Produced the animation for Stop Aids Campaign "Never Give Up".
・ 6th Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Kokekhota, Hangzhou.
・ First Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Brazil.
・ Produced the PR Video "YOKOSO JAPAN!" for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Government of Japan.
2006 ・ "Oshin" supplied to Gabon (63rd country).
・ 7th Exhibition "Hi-Vision HDTV Video Festival" held in Beijing, Guilin, Guangzhou.
・ Himalaya International Video Festival and symposium about global warming held.
・ "Project X" offered to six more countries (36 countries in total).
・ Initiation of sales of Hi-Vision HDTV video footage to worldwide broadcasters in cooperation with BBC Motion Gallery.
・ Produced and broadcast the program series "Small Counties in the World".
